KUALA LUMPUR: As if pre-ordained, the boys from the Frenz United Football Academy adhered to the script as they overcame their semifinal hurdles to earn the right to contest the Frenz Trophy Under-14 final at UiTM Shah Alam Stadium on Sunday.
The final between Frenz United Red and Frenz United Blue at 8.45pm is scheduled to be broadcast live over Astro Arena 801, with Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin, giving away the prizes.
The final hurdle to the final prove a contrasting one for the two Frenz United representatives.
While Frenz United Blue booked their ticket thanks to a 11th minute strike by striker Mohd Akhmar Haiqal Azhar for a narrow 1-0 win over Victoria Institution, Frenz United Red overcame a scare before advancing.
After an impressive run of seven games, scoring 52 goals without conceding a goal in the group matches and the quarterfinals, Mat Dinos Talib’s charges were dragged to the penalty-shootout by SMK Meru, Klang, after a 2-2 tie after regulation period.
SMK Meru twice led through Muhamad Hakim Kamarulzaman in the 3rd minute and 55th minute before Mohd Hafizuddin Mohd Zuki produced the equalisers on the 16th and the second, straight from a corner in the 60th minute.
The drama began when the teams were tied at 2-2 after five kicks with
Muhammad Fareez Mohd Jeffrery and Mohd Aliff Hafizal Mohd Noor converting for Frenz United Red and Ismail Asyraf Azhar and Muhammad Asyraf Mukmin Hazman for SMK Meru.
Sudden-death saw Masir Lausing from Frenz United Red and Aidil Haqeem Abdul Ghani for SMK Meru converting theirs.
The decider came when Muhammad Aizad Mohd Apandi, scorer of eight goals against Pendamai FC in the opening day of the tournament, missed from the spotkick while Frenz United captain, Muhammad Na’aim Abdul Razak, cooly slotted home.
